MSBA Wool Pool
The Maine Sheep Breeders Association (MSBA) is a state-wide organization that runs a wool pool every year which represents and assist sheep breeders in Maine in selling their commercial grade wool. This cooperative effort began in the 1940s, and allows individual sellers to "pool" their wool and sell it on one day. The pool handles thousands of pounds of wool each year. MSBA solicits bids for the pool and finalizes a contract before the pool. After expenses (ex. trucking) are deducted, the remaining amount is paid in a price per pound to wool producers. Participants in the pool must be members of MSBA, and producers may join at the pool. MSBA makes no profit on the pool, and only wool from Maine sheep is accepted. Standards and requirements for the pool appear in the MSBA newsletter, "The Producer". 2008 Wool Pool is Saturday. Producers bringing wool should check MSBA information for time.
| Individual producers bring their wool to the pool on a single day,
and everyone helps to bag, weigh, and load the wool. Smaller lots often need
to be combined and repacked into wool bags, so there is plenty of work for everyone. MSBA would like to acknowledge the assistance of the Maine Department of Agriculture in this event. A wool pool is also held each year by the Central Maine Sheep Breeders Association. |
